Clear Quartz is the most powerful healer, and the most versatile of all stones.
My dear Riviera Coco friends, welcome to a very important blog I have been wanting to write for a while.
Let’s talk today about the oceans and how we can help to preserve their beauty so we can keep enjoying them, preserve their beauties and give to our future generations the same chance we had to fill their hearts with the ocean’s wonders.
Oceans cover 71 percent of the planet and are home to important species and ecosystems that we rely on for food, climate regulation and more. Now, more than ever, the fate of the ocean is in our hands. Saving the oceans can sometimes feel like an overwhelming task, but there are so many small things we can all easily do that can make a huge difference.
Here are 10 lifestyle choices that I invite you to implement. Luckily, when adopted, these smaller changes can help protect and even restore our oceans and ecosystems for future generations.
The easiest way to help! The start is by using reusable plastic products. Remember a big part of what we throw in the garbage finish in the oceans. Plastic degrades marine habitats and contributes to the deaths of many marine animals. Floating plastic often looks like food and many sea turtles, birds, whales, and fish eat it, blocking or injuring their digestive system to death. Scary right?
Reusable plastic bottles and cloth grocery bags will make a huge difference. These two are easy to implement in your new lifestyle and you will become the correct example for others to start doing the same.
Many products that used to be made in plastic are now starting to be produced in biodegradable materials. Start using wood or paper cotton swabs, bamboo toothbrushes, wood hair brushes, biodegradable disposable plates for your parties, or simply choose products & food that is sold in nonplastic packaging. There are so many options in the market, but all starts with you as a consumer choosing wisely what you buy.
Speak with your local stores and ask them to start giving you better options that respect the planet.
Reduce the effects of climate change on the ocean by making small changes on your energy consumption.
Start by walking more! This is not only good for your health, and this bikini body you want to achieve. Leave the car at home when you can, use your bike, carpooling with colleges. Think that every time you do this the planet is a little cleaner!
Be also conscious of your energy use at home and work. A few things you can do to get started today: Switch to led lights, take the stairs or use a fan to avoid using your AC. Put on a sweater in the winter instead of turning up your thermostat. Simple changes make a difference.
The fewer fertilizers and pesticides we use, the better. When fertilizers are used in gardening and agriculture, the excess eventually ends up in the ocean. Fertilizers & pesticides are not just killing the bees and important biodiversity outside the surface, they are creating enormous “Dead Zones” underwater. These are areas with very low levels of oxygen in the water, killing all marine life, including coral reefs. Fish and shrimp must escape the area or die.
You can even become a more responsible pet owner ;). Read pet food labels and consider seafood sustainability when choosing a diet for your pet.
So, choose organic foods and use fertilizer sparingly.
In the new millennial battle against meat, people are turning more and more through seafood and fish consumption. Global fish populations are rapidly being depleted due to demand, loss of habitat, and unsustainable fishing practices.
Buy smartly, read the packaging and only choose products from responsible fishing practices. Help reduce the demand for overexploited species by choosing seafood that is both healthful and sustainable.
According to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), three-quarters of the world’s fisheries are now overexploited, fully exploited, significantly depleted or recovering from overexploitation.
What you can do is ask your local seafood restaurant or fish market to buy from sustainable fisheries. Look for special terms like “line caught”, “diver caught”, “sustainably caught” or “sustainably harvested.
You can start by reading this Consumer Seafood Guide from SeaFoodWatch.com in order to buy and consume sustainable species.
We all love summer vacations by the beach and appreciate beautiful clean sand and water. Then, why leave all that trash when we finish? One of the things that break my heart the most, is all the cigarette leftovers & plastic bottles I see by the beach after all tourists leave. As beach crowds increase, so does the amount of trash left behind or blown away.
Always collect and dispose of your trash, reuse, reduce and recycle.
Travel the ocean responsibly. Not only by the beach but when you are boating or traveling by the sea. Never throw anything overboard, and be aware of marine life in the waters around you.
Go a step forward and book an eco-friendly cruise for your next vacation, there are many options available around the world. All life on Earth is connected to the ocean and its inhabitants. The more you learn about the issues facing this vital system, the more you’ll want to help ensure its health.
Don’t let your day at the beach contribute to the destruction of our oceans. Bring a trash bag with you for your garbage and volunteer for beach clean-ups.
Hopefully, more and more commuted people are working on environmental organizations such as 4Ocean, Oceana, Green Peace, Ocean Conservancy and many more. They are fighting to protect ocean habitats and marine wildlife.
Use google to find your national organizations and consider giving financial support or volunteering for hands-on work or advocacy.
If you live near the coast or travel by one, join up with a local branch or group and get involved in cool projects.
The change starts with you. Start by giving your vote to public officials that support good ocean policies. Do your research on candidates and make an informed decision, then exercise your right (and responsibility) to vote.
Contact your representatives and lawmakers, and start by telling them your concerns and desire to save the oceans. By contacting them you make them aware of the crisis facing marine life and our ocean.
Don’t be shy! Sometimes a simple letter can make them focus on these important issues. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
“Riviera Coco’s Beach Cleanup 2019. Let’s do more this 2020!”
This is an easy and fun one. You can either pick up trash while you travel to the beach or participate in an organized beach cleanup.
Pick up garbage and litter near the beaches you visit. And always share it on your social media! Not to look cool, but to show others how easy it is to make the difference and inspire your friends to start doing the same.
Much of the plastic and debris found in the ocean has its beginnings in beach litter. It’s easy to lead by example, bring a garbage bag and feel proud to clean the planet.
Start with this step! The easiest action you can take is to share what you just learned. In two clicks you can make your first step on saving the planet. Share this blog with your friends, pin the images on a public Pinterest board, make a story about what you just learned. Any help big or small is a new step to live in a better world.
The more active you are in conversation, the more aware others will become. Share your concerns not only with your friends but with the store owners where you purchase daily. Encourage them to only stock sustainable and ocean-friendly products. The more we ask for these new healthier lifestyle requirements, the faster they will adapt and implement better practices.
There are many other simple ways to help. Please tell me in the comments if you want me to write another blog with more ways to help save the oceans. And also tell me if you have other ideas on how we can help.
I really hope this has been useful and you will start making the difference with at least one new lifestyle improvement.
Sending you lots of Summer vibes! Together we are stronger.
